with Longwood Gardens & Bartram's Garden
Escape the winter blahs for a long weekend getaway to the City of Brotherly Love and the world’s largest indoor flower show.
While in Philadelphia we will take the opportunity to visit some of America’s most important horticultural showplaces, enjoy an escorted city tour, and of course, the main event, the famous Philadelphia Flower Show. A brief itinerary of your tour follows.
~ Depart your city and arrive in Philadelphia early afternoon and meet your tour escorts who will be with you the entire tour. You will be transferred via private motorcoach to the perfectly located Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.
Why not explore the near-by Reading market, a fabulous indoor marketplace with all varieties of shops, food and restaurants. Later join us a nice glass of wine and welcome dinner with your fellow travelers. D
~Today we visit Delaware’s Brandywine Valley, home of renowned museums made famous by the legacy of the Wyeths and DuPonts. Our first stop will be the incredible and much-admired Longwood Gardens, once the private estate of Pierre S. DuPont and regarded as one of the world’s greatest gardens. With more than four acres of indoor conservatories, you will enjoy the seasonal floral displays and lush tropical plants that grow year-round.
Afterward, we’ll visit the Brandywine River Museum, where a large collection of the Wyeth family art is displayed. You are sure to recognize the full size illustrations from the classic Treasure Island, as well as many other period works. Our last stop is Bartram’s Garden, America's oldest living botanical garden featuring an 18th century farmstead, native plants, wildflower meadow, and wetland.
~
Just a short walk away is the Philadelphia Flower Show, and you have the entire day to enjoy all that this well-respected Show has to offer. You will quickly understand why this is America's premier flower event, with some even daring to say that it is better than England's Chelsea Flower Show (we don't agree). This year’s theme is ‘Springtime In Paris’ and the featured displays will draw from all things Paris: from the Louvre to the Musee d’Orsay and artists such as Renoir, Monet and van Gogh.
Enjoy all the spectacular displays which range from elaborate landscapes to individual and club entries of prize horticultural specimens. Don’t miss the fabulous market place with over 150 vendors. Foodies will love the International Wine and Spirits Garden and the International Dessert and Coffee Bar. The more studious gardeners will want to take advantage of the many lectures and workshops taking place throughout the day. Feel free to leave and return as often as you wish.
~
We begin the day with an enjoyable walking tour of the historical district of Philadelphia including stops at the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, and a quick look at the famous steps from the movie 'Rocky.' You will gain new appreciation for our founding fathers, and our Nation's history, as you explore Philadelphia's fascinating past through its streets of stunning and diverse architecture.
Afterwards you will enjoy a very special farewell lunch at the historic City Tavern restaurant which has celebrated more than 230 years of hospitality and features ales, breads and entrees from historically accurate recipes. Our motorcoach returns us to the airport for our evening flight home with new friends and wonderful memories from another fabulous Huron Tours & Travel excursion. Or, extend your stay in Philadelphia and add additional hotel nights using our specially priced rates. Call for pricing and availability. L
